«Το Ελληνικό Μεσογειακό Πανεπιστήμιο ιδρύθηκε με τον ν. 4610/2019, αλλά η ιστορία του στην ανώτατη εκπαίδευση είναι παλαιότερη, κυρίως μέσα από το ΤΕΙ Κρήτης. Έχει έδρα το Ηράκλειο και εγκαταστάσεις σε πέντε πόλεις (Ηράκλειο, Χανιά, Ρέθυμνο, Άγιο Νικόλαο, Σητεία), με πέντε σχολές και έντεκα τμήματα.»
