«Το ΔΠΘ είναι το πρώτο πολυκεντρικό περιφερειακό πανεπιστήμιο της Ελλάδας, με έδρα την Κομοτηνή και πανεπιστημιουπόλεις σε επτά πόλεις της Περιφέρειας Ανατολικής Μακεδονίας και Θράκης. Ιδρύθηκε το 1973 και άρχισε να λειτουργεί το 1975. Διαθέτει 10 Σχολές και 28 Τμήματα που καλύπτουν θετικές, τεχνολογικές, ανθρωπιστικές, κοινωνικές και επιστήμες υγείας, με έρευνα εστιασμένη σε εφαρμοσμένους τομείς και στις ανάγκες της Περιφέρειας. Είναι ιδρυτικό μέλος της Ευρωπαϊκής Συμμαχίας Πανεπιστημίων EMERGE.»
